Celebrate English Wine Week here at The Marygreen Manor

You may not have realised it but we’re currently slap, bang in the middle of English Wine Week. From the 23rd May all the way through to the 31st sees England celebrate its very own, home grown English wines in what will be a national campaign. To celebrate, we thought we’d give our very own tips on how to select the finest of wines.

It may come as somewhat of a shock but good wine doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive, nor does it have to be old. So what does make for a great bottle of vino? Well for a start it should be deep, complex and remain with you long after you had your first delicious mouthful. So what do you do when there are so many to choose from? Well the age-old ‘swirl, sniff and sip’ is a great start but that’s not all. Here are some of the expert’s tips when it comes to selecting the perfect accompaniment to your meal.

Check out the label at the back

Yes the front of the bottle may be what entices you but it’s the nitty gritty on the back label that you need to take a look at. Sometimes there are more clues about what it’s like such as the fruity flavours or even the aging process. You should also keep your eyes peeled for any stamps of approval that may have been placed on the bottle, as these are always a great sign of a quality wine. Go ahead and ask our waiters for recommendations too, as they have an extensive knowledge of our award winning wine list.

Smell the scent of the bottle

Swirl and sniff first and foremost. Have you ever heard people ask if it ‘has good legs?’ well they’re referring to the rather slender lines of liquid that slowly drip down the sides of the glass. This means very little when it comes to a good wine however, it can be a clue to its alcohol content. What you do want to take note of however is the smell. Can you detect honey? Apple or peppers? The chances are, the more you can smell the better it’ll actually taste.

Use that tongue of yours

Don’t worry, we haven’t veered off in the wrong direction here. Once you’ve had a sniff of the wine then it’s a good idea to have a sip but we don’t just mean slurping it back. Let it linger on your tongue for a while until you can really decide what it is you taste. Do you taste dark cherries or grapefruit maybe? Use those amazing taste buds of yours. Here’s a hint, if it isn’t putrid in scent and you can taste lots then the wine is likely very complex and if the flavours linger on your tongue for some time, then all the better.

Look at the numbers

Take a look at when it was made? Is it 2005 Bordeaux? If so, it’s a good vintage! If you do a little homework and get to know your years and regions, you’ll know if their climate and weather could produce the perfectly ripe harvest to make the good wine you’re looking for. Extreme weather can take its toll on the quality of some grapes so it’s always worth checking out. The general rule of thumb is that you can drink white wine around one to two years after bottling and red wines around two to three years after bottling. Better quality wines have a much better staying power and can generally last around three to ten years.

Our last wine tip: don’t be afraid of a screw cap. Did you know that a small percentage of wines that have a cork can become cork-tainted or undrinkable? A screw cap can often merely be a sign that the winery is committed to retaining the wine’s excellent flavour.
