Things to do in Essex, Weald Country Park – Brentwood

If you’re making the Marygreen Manor Hotel your base for a short – or longer – break and want to explore the Brentwood area, you certainly won’t be short of things to do!

You could fuel yourself with one of the Marygreen Manor’s delicious snacks or full meals before you head out to hit the town and its surroundings, or explore other local eateries.

But whether you want to expend any pent-up energy, hit the shops or enjoy something more relaxing such as a stroll in beautiful parkland or visiting local attractions, you can always find things to do in Essex without going too far afield.

How about Dragon’s Lair Paintball , just outside of Brentwood, right near the Secret Nuclear Bunker? (Yes, you read this right – see below!). The UK Paintball Sports Federation accredited site offers you the perfect setting to enjoy one of the fastest growing sports in Europe.

Equally energetic pursuits can be found at Brentwood Karting. They boast an award-winning service, value for money and karts suitable for youngsters aged six years and upwards, as well as ‘senior’ race karts that can reach speeds of up to 50mph.

You could also burn off a few calories and have fun at the same time by taking part in some Laser Warfare, based in Warley Leisure Park, Brentwood. It makes use of Brentwood’s attractive rural setting, with the games being played in woodland.

Exhausted by the very thought of all this activity? How about a gentle stroll around one of Brentwood’s country parks? The jewel in Brentwood’s crown is Weald Country Park. It covers 500 acres – the biggest country park in Essex. Established 700 years ago, it now offers beautiful lakes and tree-lined avenues. There are also various nature-based social activities for adults and children.

Still need some more relaxation? Book up for a beauty treatment at J.K. Beauty in Mountnessing, on the perimeter of Brentwood (01277 355477) or a hair or beauty indulgence at The Lounge Hair Salon .

Eating options abound – as well as various familiar chain restaurants (Prezzo, Zizzi) there is quintessential Italian restaurant Tarantino with its delicious Italian food and striking ceiling-high murals or A La Turka serving a mix of Turkish and Mediterranean cuisine with the warmest of smiles.

Retail therapy is a piece of cake with Westfield Stratford City, Lakeside and Bluewater shopping centres all within reasonable driving distance (or, in the case of Westfield, a short ride on the train).

We’ve saved the best (or, at the very least, the most unusual!) for last: it may sound like a spoof but the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is for real. It’s in Kelvedon Hatch, near Brentwood, and is well sign-posted, but make sure you check to find out when it’s open to visitors. Once inside, you’ll learn about the three ‘lives’ of the bunker – one of which was as a ‘home’ for the hundreds of military and civil personnel who would be based inside if there was a nuclear attack.
